| ROY G. BIVAs many of you know, I've been pursuing my passion as filmmaker for the past few years, and I've recently embarked on my most ambitious project to date - ROY G. BIV. The film is based on a true story of a West Virginia coal miner with a terminal illness that needs to find refuge for his aging son with Down Syndrome. It's a touching story about the unique bond between parent and child. We're set to shoot in West Virginia this summer, we've started casting, we assembled a great team to make this movie. Here is where you come in. We're in the middle of fund-raising for this project and the film needs your help. In the past, many of you have helped with donations of services, vehicles, supplies, locations, and most importantly, your undying support. Given this project's larger scope (25 minutes, 35mm and outside of NYC), we're in need of funds this time. And I normally wouldn't ask you to donate if it weren't for: 1) I truly believe in the potential of this project and 2) donations are tax deductible. The project has recieved a great deal of validation: we recently won the Fuji Film Award and Fotokem Processing Award so we now have our film and processing. The film is a graduate thesis film from NYU, who almuni include Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee and Ang Lee. And the last thesis film that I produced was selected for this year's Cannes Film Festival. There is also an altruistic aspect. We are working with mentally disabled actors who typically do not have an opportunity to be in films. Despite the accolades and grants, we need to raise $30,000 to go ahead with production. We are officially a non-profit. If you already make charitable donations, please consider ROY G. BIV as your charity this year. If you love film and ever wanted to be part of one, this is your opportunity. Please let me know how much I can count on you for. For those of you who want to donate, have committed to donate or know of other who want to donate, tax-deductible donations can be made online through our non-profit sponsor at: https://www.fracturedatlas.org/site/contribute/donate/962 You can also: 1) call in your donation to Fractured Atlas (212-277-8020) or 2) send a check (Make your check payable to "Fractured Atlas" and include "Roy G. Biv" on the memo line. Send your check to: Kim Spurlock; 166 7th Avenue, Apt. 4; Brooklyn, NY 11215).
Every amount helps, whether it be $20 or $2,000! (And don't forget your company's gift matching program.) For more information about the film, please contact me or visit www.roygbivmovie.com. Lastly, please spread the word to other organizations and individuals who may be interested in donating. Thanks! Always, David | | |
| My Screenplay Performed at HBOTHE MIGHTY HERCULES - a screenplay that I co-wrote with Kim Spurlock - is one of the finalists at the UrbanWorld Film Festival. As part of the events, HBO will be hosting a staged reading of part of the screenplay. Hopefully, it'll get picked up and I can start work on Gremlins 4 (j/k). The reading is open to the public, and it's first come, first seated, but I do get to reserve some seats for my entourage. :) If you're free on Friday, June 22 from 11am-1pm and want to see my screenplay come to life, just drop me a note. WHEN: Friday, June, 22nd 11am-1pm WHERE: HBO Theatre, 1100 Ave. of the Americas b/w 42 & 43 St. | | |
| Vote for Angel Island Immigration StationMy good friend, Erika, works for the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation ("AIISF"). The mission of the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation is to promote a greater understanding of how Pacific Coast immigration and its role in shaping America's past, present, and future. The Foundation needs your help - specifically your VOTE - to earn $10 million dollars towards the preservation of the historical landmarks on Angel Island. After New York’s Ellis Island, Angel Island was the second most significant immigration station in the United States. From 1910 through 1940, it was the West Coast entry point for over one million, Pacific Rim immigrants many of whom were detained there as a result of the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act. This “Ellis Island of the West” needs structural repairs and a new roof for the World War II-era mess hall. 1) Go to http://www.partnersinpreservation.com. 2) Vote for AIISF 3) Repeat daily. 4) Spread the word. From Erika: There are only 7 more days to vote at www.partnersinpreservation.com for the Angel Island Immigration Station! We thank you all for your votes, especially those that diligently vote each and every day for our project!
Now we need you to continue to vote and to continue to spread the word to your family and friends! Through your support we have maintained a solid second place position for the past 4 weeks! We were in first place shortly for the very first week! And more importantly we gained one percentage point last week!
The results of projects that have been chosen to be funded will be announced the evening of November 14 in San Francisco. We have been honored to have been selected as one of the 25 projects and through this process we have gained invaluable visibility for our Angel Island.
Thank you again and remember to go to www.partnersinpreservation.com for your last week of voting!

| Dynastic WealthFrom Monday's press conference about Warren Buffet's gift to the Gates Foundation:
"I can’t think of anything that’s more counter to idea of meritocracy than dynastic wealth. The idea that you win the lottery the moment you are born if you come from the right womb, just strikes me as outrageous.
I had the advantage of a home where people talked about interesting things and intelligent parents that went to very decent schools. They had all kind of advantages let alone being given billions of claim checks on the activities of others in the future.
That’s what wealth is. They’re a bunch of claim checks. You can use that wealth in any way that you want to cash in those claim checks. But the idea of passing those from generation to generation so that hundreds of your descendants can essentially command the resources of other people simply because they came from the right womb flies in the face of a meritocratic society
I love it when I'm around a country club, and I hear people talking about these debilitating aspects of a welfare cycle, where some woman had a child at 17, and all these terrible things are happening because of food stamps and the fact that we’re perpetuating this by keeping these people who are not behaving in a way they’re suppose to in a situation where they continue to do so merely by eating.
At the same time, they leave their kids a lifetime and beyond supply of food stamps. They essentially instead of having a welfare officer, they have a trust officer. And instead of having food stamps, they have stocks and bonds that pay them dividends and interest."
- Warren Buffet
I couldn't agree more. | | |
